About the Breed

The Australian Koolie, often referred to simply as “Koolie,” is an intelligent and versatile herding dog breed with deep roots in Australia. Known for their exceptional work ethic, agility, and adaptability, Koolies have been invaluable working partners to farmers and stockmen for many years. Today, they continue to impress with their herding skills while also excelling in various dog sports and making wonderful companions for active households.

The Australian Koolie’s exact origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery, as their development can be traced back to the early 19th century in Australia. They were bred by crossing imported British herding dogs, such as Border Collies and Collies, with local Australian dingoes. This infusion of dingo blood is believed to have contributed to the Koolie’s exceptional working abilities and adaptability to the harsh Australian environment.

Physical Appearance

Koolies come in a variety of coat colours, including solid, merle, and bi-colour patterns. Their coats can be short or medium in length, dense, and weather-resistant, providing them protection from the elements. They have a well-muscled and agile body, reflecting their athleticism and stamina. The breed’s size can vary, with males typically standing between 17 to 22 inches (43 to 56 cm) tall at the shoulder and females slightly smaller.

Koolies are renowned for their intelligence, versatility, and strong work ethic. They are highly trainable and thrive in environments where they have a job to do. In addition to their herding skills, Koolies make loyal and devoted companions. They form strong bonds with their families and are known for their protective nature. They are typically alert, energetic, and always ready for a new adventure.

Family Pets

While Koolies are primarily working dogs, they can also make loving and active family pets. However, due to their herding instincts and high energy levels, they may not be suitable for every household. Koolies thrive in homes where they receive ample exercise, mental stimulation, and positive reinforcement-based training. They enjoy being included in family activities and can get along well with children and other pets when properly socialized from an early age.

Koolies are incredibly intelligent and thrive in environments where they are given regular training and mental stimulation. They excel in various dog sports, such as agility, obedience, herding trials, frisbee, and flyball.

Koolies require daily activities that challenge their physical abilities and mental agility. Long walks, jogs, hikes, and play sessions are essential to keep them content and prevent behavioural issues arising from pent-up energy.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

This website was created to further educate people about the Australian Koolie (sometimes also referred to as German Koolies). The Koolie is often painted to be a unicorn of a breed, and while it is true that they are great dogs, there are some things that people need to be aware of before deciding where to purchase their puppy.

With this website, we aim to educate and inform people. We are independent, do not stand to profit from the breed and have first-hand experience with the breed.
